Shot on location in the remote Northern Lau Islands, Fiji.
When you’re packing for a remote expedition through the South Pacific, every piece needs to earn its place. It’s not just about style – it’s about craftsmanship, practicality, and a timeless aesthetic that transcends seasons. On a recent journey through the Northern Lau Islands in Fiji, I found two such pieces from Australian heritage brand Helen Kaminski – a label I’ve been wearing since the early days of THIS ISLAND LIFE, with whom I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating for over a decade.
Our expedition cruise with Captain Cook Cruises Fiji aboard the MS Caledonian Sky took us well off the grid. We explored uninhabited islands, anchored in sapphire lagoons, and walked barefoot along shorelines that felt entirely untouched. Our mode of transport to these remote island shores? Sleek black zodiacs that sliced through the sea with style – and a fair bit of spray. On those bumpy crossings, one of the expedition team members, Ice, became my unexpected fashion assistant. Fiercely protective of my raffia hat, he’d hold it safely until we reached dry land. The Fijians are known for their incredible sense of humour, and Ice was no exception. I’d brought a few older Helen Kaminski pieces along for the trip, and each time he spotted a new one, he’d grin and say, “Kaminski? Thought so,” playing the part of a self-appointed fashion expert who’d become well-versed in the care and handling of high-end raffia accessories (see last photo!).
It was the perfect backdrop for showcasing the Antonella Bucket Hat and Palmas Basket Bag – two of my most-loved pieces of the season. Both designs feature Helen Kaminski’s signature wide raffia braid, elevated by oversized contrast flecks created through intricate hand embroidery. This artisanal detailing gives each piece a unique, contemporary character while celebrating the skill and traditions of the brand’s makers.
The Antonella Bucket Hat balances structure with softness, offering UPF 50+ sun protection beneath its 8cm brim – an essential on the water. With a sculptural silhouette and adjustable inner band, it blends form and function with effortless ease. The Palmas Basket Bag, with its open weave and hand-finished leather straps, carried all my daily essentials while nodding to island style through every stitch.
Although these particular styles are no longer available, Helen Kaminski continues to release stunning pieces each season that echo the same spirit of sun-drenched adventure. Their collections celebrate natural materials, handcrafted detail, and the kind of quiet luxury that feels right at home in places like the Northern Lau – where the only noise comes from the wind in the palms and the water lapping the hull of your boat.
For those seeking accessories that travel well and tell a story, Helen Kaminski remains one of my go-to brands. Their pieces don’t just complement the journey – they become part of it.
