VILLA LUJA IN CANGGU, BALI [VILLA REVIEW]

Cocooned in the lush heart of Canggu, Villa Luja was the first stop on our babymoon in Bali – and from the moment we arrived, it felt like stepping into our own luxurious Bali bubble. We were only there for one night, but it was enough to fall under its spell.

Owned by close friends of ours who live in Bali, this five-bedroom private villa has been styled with impeccable taste and a level of detail that’s hard to describe – you have to experience it. Every piece has been thoughtfully handpicked by the owner, who has a truly incredible eye for design. She worked closely with local artisans to bring her vision to life, resulting in custom-made furnishings, textured finishes, and decorative pieces that make the space feel both elevated and deeply personal – a world away from cookie-cutter rentals.

One of the unexpected highlights of our stay was being taken on a mini homewares buying mission. You’ve got to love a friend who takes you to explore her favourite local stores – the places where Bali’s villa owners and stylists shop – and helps you negotiate the best prices. We’d just moved into a new home in Sydney, and Villa Luja became the ultimate source of island inspiration. I left not only rested, but creatively recharged.

THE VILLA

Set over three stunning levels, Villa Luja sleeps up to 11 guests in five spacious bedrooms, each with its own ensuite. The design is open, modern, and beautifully styled – clean lines and tropical touches meet soft neutral tones and natural textures. Every corner is curated for comfort, from the breezy indoor-outdoor living space to the rooftop terrace with uninterrupted views and a jacuzzi just made for sunset soaks.

Ryder was instantly drawn to the 12-metre pool, and it was easy to see why – wide steps for paddling, a curved slide, and space to play all day. The villa can also be set up with child-safe pool fencing installed before your arrival for peace of mind, which is a big tick for travelling families.

With just one night between other bookings (the villa is in high demand and books out well in advance), we didn’t get to try every feature – but next time, the massage room, golf simulator, and rooftop putting green are firmly on the list.

SERVICE AND STAFF

The service at Villa Luja is what truly elevates the experience. Dedek, the villa manager, was warm, welcoming, and effortlessly accommodating – the kind of host who makes everything feel possible. I asked for fresh coconuts. Jason asked for local Babi Guling. Both arrived within the hour.

The Luja team can arrange anything you need – from private chefs, spa services, and groceries to a personal chauffeur/driver who can take you around Canggu and beyond. And with 24-hour security, it’s a space where you feel completely safe, looked after, and free to relax.

DINING AND ENTERTAINING

With its sleek, fully equipped kitchen and generous dining area, Villa Luja is made for entertaining – but the beauty of staying here is that you don’t have to cook at all. Whether you’re craving a private chef-prepared dinner, a casual breakfast, or just a few local delicacies, everything can be brought to you.

Though we only had a short stay, being able to eat in while Ryder played in the pool just metres away was a game-changer. It’s the kind of effortless, no-fuss luxury that makes a family holiday actually feel like a holiday.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY FEATURES

Villa Luja is surprisingly well set up for families. There’s space to run, shallow steps in the pool, floaties and football goals, and plenty of toys tucked away for little ones. The open layout made it easy to keep an eye on Ryder while still enjoying moments to ourselves.

And for added peace of mind, the option to have removable pool fencing installed is something every travelling parent will appreciate. High chairs and cots are also available on request.

LOCATION AND SURROUNDINGS

Villa Luja is tucked down a peaceful lane in central Canggu, offering total privacy while still being close to the action. A short scooter or easy bike ride will take you to some of the area’s best cafes and beach clubs – though truthfully, we found it hard to tear ourselves away from the villa.

If you do venture out, favourites like Milk & Madu, Mason, and The Lawn are all nearby. For beach days, Echo Beach and Berawa Beach are both within easy reach and great for a sunset surf or a laid-back afternoon.

NEXT TIME WISHLIST

With just one night between other bookings, we didn’t have time to experience everything Villa Luja has to offer – but that didn’t stop us from dreaming. I kept picturing myself up in the rooftop jacuzzi, Ryder snuggled beside me, watching the sky shift through shades of sunset as the breeze moved through the palms. It’s the kind of moment you imagine when planning a slow, sun-soaked escape – and one we’re saving for next time.

Also high on the wishlist: an in-villa massage in the private spa room while Jason and Ryder splash in the pool. And next time, we’ll be back with baby Cole, ready to create new memories as a family of four. Even without ticking off every feature, Villa Luja managed to cast its spell. It’s the kind of place that stays with you – a sanctuary for gathering, unwinding, and returning to, again and again.
