Choosing the right transfer to your Maldives resort

Seaplane or speedboat? How to choose the right transfer to your Maldives resort.

One of the questions I get asked the most when helping my audience plan their Maldives escape is whether they should choose an island resort with a boat transfer or one that requires a seaplane. It’s a surprisingly big decision – and one that can really shape your overall experience.

Because in the Maldives, the journey is part of the magic. Whether you’re skimming across the ocean in a speedboat or soaring over atolls in a seaplane, getting to your resort is more than just a transfer – it’s the beginning of your island adventure.

I’ve experienced all three types of transfers during my visits over the years – from practical boat rides to Kuramathi with a toddler in tow, to seaplane journeys over jewel-toned atolls, to late-night domestic flights that crossed the equator. Here’s everything you need to know to help decide which transfer is right for your dream escape.

Speedboat Transfers: Practical, fast, and sometimes surprisingly luxe

Speedboat transfers are available at resorts located closer to Malé, usually within 60 minutes. They’re the most straightforward option and often the most affordable – some are even included complimentary with your stay.

We’ve taken the boat to Kuramathi multiple times – it’s efficient and gets you there quickly, which is ideal when travelling with young kids. The experience is more about convenience than indulgence, but it does the job, especially if you’re eager to dive straight into island life.

That said, not all boat transfers are created equal. One&Only Reethi Rah, for example, offers a much more luxurious experience. Located just 45 minutes from Malé, guests can choose from a fleet of stylish private or shared yachts and speedboats. Picture sleek lounges, champagne on arrival, and the feeling that your holiday has already begun.

Some closer islands also offer seaplane transfers as an upgrade, even if speedboat is the standard. So if you’re craving that scenic aerial view, you don’t have to rule out nearby resorts entirely.

Seaplane Transfers: The scenic route to remote paradise

Taking a seaplane in the Maldives is next level. You’ll fly low over the Indian Ocean, with panoramic views of coral-fringed atolls and glowing blue lagoons that look almost too perfect to be real.

Many of the Maldives’ most exclusive and remote resorts are only accessible by seaplane. These are the places where you’ll feel completely removed from the rest of the world. Most guests fly with Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) – the country’s main seaplane operator – on 15-seater Twin Otter planes that take off and land directly on water.

While breathtaking, seaplane transfers come with a few practicalities. They operate during daylight hours only, and your flight may include stops at other resorts. On our journey back to Malé from Mövenpick Resort Kuredhivaru, we made a stop at Joali Being, where a guest boarded dressed head to toe in Chanel. It was a quintessential Maldives moment – luxury, style, and a hint of surrealism.

Domestic Flights: The only option for the most remote islands

While most resorts can be reached by boat or seaplane, a few are located so far from Velana International Airport (MLE) that they require a domestic flight. These resorts are typically in the Maldives’ southernmost atolls, sometimes followed by a short speedboat ride from the regional airport.

On our very first trip to the Maldives, we visited Shangri-La’s Villingili Island – a resort so remote we had to fly across the equator to reach it. Our domestic flight didn’t land until around midnight, making it one of the only transfer options suitable for late arrivals.

Domestic transfers are operated by Maldivian, the national airline. While less glamorous than seaplanes or private yachts, they’re efficient, comfortable, and often the only way to reach ultra-remote islands.

Private Seaplane Charters: Ultimate flexibility and exclusivity

For travellers seeking the ultimate in luxury, Trans Maldivian Airways also offers private seaplane charters. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or travelling with a group, you can book the entire aircraft – perfect for photo flights, exclusive transfers, or just avoiding shared travel.

Some high-end resorts operate their own branded seaplanes, which can also be chartered privately. Even if a resort doesn’t typically use seaplanes, you can often still charter one to fly there for an unforgettable arrival.

Cost Considerations: Budget vs experience

If budget is a factor, this could be what tips the decision for you:

  • Speedboat transfers: Typically US$100 – 200 return per adult, and often included in your stay
  • Shared seaplane transfers: Usually US$290 – 700 per person return, depending on the distance
  • Private seaplane charters: Range from US$1,200 to US$15,000 one way, depending on the resort’s location and aircraft type
  • Domestic flights: Cost around US$200 – 400 return, followed by a short speedboat transfer

Children under two generally fly free on seaplanes and domestic flights, while child fares apply from ages 2 – 11.

What to consider when choosing

  • Location: Some islands can only be reached by seaplane or domestic flight
  • Budget: Speedboats are most affordable; seaplanes are more of a splurge
  • Children: Speedboats are more flexible; seaplanes may be loud or overwhelming for babies
  • Timing: Domestic flights and speedboats can operate after dark; seaplanes cannot
  • Experience: Seaplanes offer unbeatable views and a bucket-list-worthy moment
  • Luggage: Seaplanes have a 20kg checked + 5kg hand luggage allowance
  • Luxury: Private seaplanes or yachts offer next-level arrivals
  • Flights: Your arrival/departure time may influence which transfer is possible

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MALDIVES TRANSFERS

Are seaplane transfers worth it in the Maldives?
Absolutely. The views are breathtaking, and it’s the only way to reach some of the most remote and exclusive resorts.

How do I book my seaplane transfer?
You don’t need to worry about booking it yourself – your resort will organise the seaplane for you. When you confirm your stay, they’ll ask for your international flight details (arrival and departure times into Malé), and take care of the rest. You’ll receive the seaplane schedule closer to your travel date, usually 24–48 hours before arrival.

How much do Maldives transfers cost?
Speedboats: US$100 – 200 (often free).
Seaplanes: US$290 – 700 (shared), US$1,200 – 15,000 (private).
Domestic flights: US$200 – 400.

Can you choose between a seaplane or boat transfer?
Sometimes. If a resort offers both, you can choose. Even resorts that primarily offer speedboats may allow private seaplane charters on request.

Do any Maldives resorts require a domestic flight?
Yes—resorts in the far south, like the former Shangri-La’s Villingili, require a domestic flight. These can operate at night and are the only way to reach certain atolls.

Do seaplanes fly at night in the Maldives?
No. Seaplanes only operate between 06:00 and 16:00 due to visibility and safety.

When should I book my international flights?
Plan to arrive in Malé by or before 15:00 hrs. For departures, choose a flight after 09:00 hrs to allow for transfer timing.

Will someone meet me at the airport?
Yes. A resort representative will meet you on arrival holding a sign with the resort name. If you don’t see them right away, ask any airport rep.

How early will I leave the resort before my flight?
Resorts usually arrange to get you to the airport 2 – 3 hours before your departure – so early flights may require pre-dawn wake-ups.

What’s the luggage allowance on seaplanes?
20kg checked + 5kg hand luggage per person. Additional weight incurs extra fees.

How do children travel on seaplanes?
Children under 2 years fly free. Kids aged 2 – 11 require a child ticket. Ages 12+ are charged as adults.

Are seaplane transfers suitable for children?
Yes—seaplane transfers are safe and suitable for all ages. Babies under two travel on your lap, and older kids usually love the scenic flight. If your child is sensitive to noise, I recommend bringing noise-cancelling headphones for a more comfortable ride.

Which resorts require a seaplane transfer?
Any resort located outside Malé Atoll will usually require a seaplane. These include many of the most secluded and luxurious properties.
