How to get the beachy island life look

FIRST BASE X THIS ISLAND LIFE

I often get asked for my favourite summer beauty tips, and in particular how I did my hair and make-up for this recent sunrise shoot at South Curl Curl Beach. While the ocean breeze did play a big role in this wind-swept summer look, it was a mix of my everyday beauty rituals and a few tricks I use to pump up the beach beauty vibe.

Hair:

I get my hair looked after by Sydney hair stylist Jasmine Connelley. Jasmine has been doing my hair for around seven years. I get a cut and colour every eight weeks, which consists of her signature balayage, tiny baby foils and a tint. This was shot seven weeks after last having my hair done. To keep the blonde highlights from going brassy between appointments, I use Godwell ‘Soft Colour 10P Pastel Pearl Blonde’ toner once a week – a mousse that you apply to your hair for 15-minutes to keep your colour fresh and bright.

To give my hair a tousled beach wave, I used the Babyliss ‘Pro Titanium Ceramic Conical Wand’ in the 25-13mm size. The wand also comes in a smaller and larger size – the smaller one is for short hair, but the medium and larger size will depend on how big you want the waves in your hair. I prefer the medium size one as my curls always drop so I need them to be pretty tight to start with to get the wavy look I’m after. The wand gets super hot and is really damaging on bleached hair, so I always do a treatment before using it.

My favourite treatment conditioner is Terrax ‘Original Crema’ – it’s actually what I use as a normal conditioner. To do a treatment I leave it in for as long as I can whether it’s 30-minutes or overnight. For an extra boost, I warm-up a towel in the dryer and wrap it around my head.

Skin:

I haven’t been out in the sun as much as usual, so I’m definitely not as dark as I could be right now. After four years of hardly having a winter, I’ve become a bit more conscious about covering up and not lying out. I have recently discovered spray tans and will often now get one before a shoot, an event or a trip. Tan Temple in Bondi do THE BEST spray tans in Sydney – the tan gives a super natural glow and fades off evenly over a week. The spray tan that I had for this shoot is one that you wash off after two hours, that gives a natural looking colour. I usually get it done the day before because it continues developing for a few hours after you wash it off.

Nails:

I get my nails done at USA Nails in Bondi Junction (80 Ebley Street) – it’s the only place in Sydney where a Shellac manicure will last you three weeks. I have been getting the same colour for 18 months now – a creamy-off-white that goes with EVERYTHING. It’s number 58 and they don’t have it at other USA Nail salons – I’ve only been able to find it at Ebley Street.

Make-up:

The generous team over at Benefit gifted me their fantastic ‘Sexy & Scrumptious’ beauty kit for Christmas and I’ve been using it every day since. It includes a mini cheek highlighter, a lip and cheek tint, lip gloss and their best selling mascara, as well as a beautiful coral-coloured blush and an eye shadow palette with beachy-bronzed colours that include peachy sheen, terracotta satin, steamy copper, deep bronze and passion pearl.
